In March of 1968, SCLC convened the “Minority Group Conference” in Atlanta, GA. This was the first gathering of its kind attempting to bring together leaders together across race, geographic, and issue lines. Delegates from the Chicano movement, white coal miners from Kentucky and West Virginia, Native American and Puerto Rican activists met with Dr. King and SCLC leaders in an attempt to address the challenges of a multi-racial poor people’s strategy. —
